Not sure how that translates into a rationale for not having a proper
`make uninstall` in an auto-foo app.

Which sounds like a workaround -- albeit an effective one! -- for stuff
that should work seamlessly, but doesn't necessarily.
until i get this understood and ironed out, 9.9.3 is a complete
non-starter here.
we build countelss server apps, wrapped & installed by checkinstall with
nary a problem. so far, only with bind993.
there's clearly some sort of correlation. personally, i don't believe
it's NOT related to bind in some unique, annoying, manner.
but, as you say -- not your problem.
