to be clear, dnstap can do streaming, or storage. it lacks a lot 
compared to c-dns for storage, but it's not limited to streaming.

also to be clear, protobuf could be swapped out to any other xdr 
including cbor, and dnstap would retain its current character. i don't 
recommend this, since protobuf is open source and dnstap already has an 
installed base. but it's not nec'y to use c-dns in order to use cbor, 
and that point should not be lost. cbor is excellent work, and if we 
wanted a new binary dns protocol, i'd pick cbor vs. asn1, protobuf, or 
any of the binary json mappings.
